The History of Touch
Our sense of touch begins in utero at about 5 weeks of gestation. Our largest organ, the skin, is the first organ to complete its development making touch is our most primitive sense. The recorded history of touch can be traced in China 3,000 B.C. At the end of the 19th Century, Per Henrik Ling returned from China and developed a system of soft tissue manipulation. He founded the Swedish Movement Treatment. Presently, most people are aware of the term "Swedish Massage" which refers to this first type of modern massage.
